About this poster
“Dan and I have been experimenting with new ways that we can work together while living in different cities, and one thing that we've found we really like is have Dan come up with a concept and do the sketch which I then ink and color and then hand back to him for type treatment. In addition to being fun, this method actually seems to bypass our individual anxieties—I tend to be REALLY slow in the initial idea/sketch phase (taking weeks or longer sometimes) but I can really power through the drawing and color while Dan is actually way fast at the early stuff but tends to be more methodical and deliberate in his final execution.
Although we both really like doing posters separately and taking as much time as we need on them (I know nobody's ever going to accuse us of not spending enough time on our work, ha!), it's nice to have a trick up our sleeve for working fast when we need to, as is usually the case when Phish wants a summer poster. For me, there's something about all the important compositional decisions having already been made by Dan, who I totally trust on stuff like that, that allows me to just breeze through the linework and color totally uninhibited. It's way fun and I love working this way, although in the end I definitely feel less ownership over the final image. Interestingly, I'm usually happier with it than posters that are totally my own, especially right after it's completed. I think that probably has something to do with not having spent as much time staring at it start to finish.
Dan will have to tell you more about the image and the idea, as I literally just did the grunt work on this one :)” - JS
“I think Jes summed it up pretty well...this is such a fun and interesting way to work, and it's so surreal to see a drawing I've started get sent back over, finished and familiar but not completely my own (or sometimes hardly mine at all anymore). I don't at all take for granted how cool it is that we have the kind of working relationship where this sort of process actually works out well—I always get psyched to see the liberties Jes takes with what I've done, and how she fills the space with information that wouldn't have occurred to me. I wish I could include the rough sketches I sent over to her to work with, and some of the steps in between, because that spells out pretty clearly how much of the work each of us did here (spoiler: she did the lion's share of it), but I don't have any idea of how the top brass over at Phish HQ would feel about that, so I'll hold onto it for now. I will say that I've been pretty psyched at how many people have called out exactly which street in NYC this is based on; I like that anyone's ever paying attention to things like that. The second that they released the image for this thing and I started seeing it around, I had a cringe moment that we'd inadvertently served up a really low-hanging visual pun, but I don't remember seeing anybody point it out at the time, and now probably a million people will and that's totally fine. This might be my favorite poster we've done for these guys, for whatever that's worth, haha.” - DB
