About this poster
The Avett Brothers have fast become one of my favorite bands to work for over the past few years, and I’ve been a HUGE fan of Mike Patton’s work for as long as I can remember—Faith No More’s Angel Dust was the first album I ever obsessed over from the very second it came out—so when they teamed up for this collaboration, it scratched the very best itch over here and this album has been in HEAVY rotation since it came out. It’s seriously so good and hits a perfect spot on a Venn diagram that really works for me.
For this poster, I did a slightly different thing and decided to showcase the kind of photography that I usually take out on my road trips to use as reference material for my drawings…I really love all the texture and rusty patina baked into this mashed-up wall of wrecked cars—which served as a massive full-perimeter fortress for whatever lies within—and wanted to try to capture it directly as faithfully as possible within the confines & limitations of screenprinting.
As it stands, I’m really psyched about how these turned out…there honestly wasn’t a whole lot of compromise in the translation at all (sometimes it can be a bit of a dice roll…screenprinting is an endlessly humbling process).
To complement the aged textures and rough edges of the subject matter here, I dug into my bottomless trove of Letraset press-type and found some good lettering to build all the typography, arranged loosely-but-clean and inevitably cracked and wonky in all the right places.
