Eight years ago today, I drove out to New York on no sleep, met up with @matthew.rezac and watched the Texas is the Reason band play the first of their last reunion shows.

It was the first time I’d ever gotten to see them, having missed a few Minneapolis basement shows back in the 90s for reasons I still kick myself for—and I was T H R I L L E D.

That song “If it’s here when we get back it’s ours” off the first 7” kicked off SO MANY of my mixtapes back in high school, in the hopes of transferring onto my friends and crushes the feeling I had hearing this band for the first time, so I’m sure I must’ve come off like some sort of super fan or total dork when I was talking to @normanbrannon about making posters, but he trusted me with the thing anyway. Thanks @normanbrannon, and thanks @dalybeat for pulling me aside in Chicago to tell me he had the thing framed at home. Texas Forever.

This drawing was of an old gas pump outside the now-torn-down Jordan Stop gas station a few blocks from here on Lake Street where I’d taken note—over years—of this tiny tree making its way through the mechanics of this relic from a totally different age. I guess I kinda loved that I could live in a city that kept a place for these secret remnants of the past.

At some point while I was living in Chicago, it got replaced by some other (less overgrown) gas station, which in turn got torn down a few months ago after someone blew it up with a propane tank. I’m sure whatever they put there next time will have some sweet condos on top of it. Oh well.
