About this poster

“I think this was unwittingly the first poster in a series that I've made of this weird treehouse village. Really, I guess the Phish Alpine Valley poster was the actual first one, but this was the first time I really embraced it as a place, based heavily on a really strange and somewhat hidden village that Eric Nyffeler & I accidentally stumbled upon when we were on a road trip down the West Coast, following Phil Elverum's first Mount Eerie tour after the "A Crow Looked At Me" album came out.

This place was just a web of dirt roads winding up and down the sides of a wooded valley, with houses down on the ground level, but mostly set up into the walls of the hills. Some were on stilts, and some had cartoonishly long wooden staircases leading up to them, and wooden bridges connecting houses above us. Lots of weird little driveways that just plunged down below us into darkness, and there seemed to be foot paths connecting our road to sheds and shipping containers and other small buildings set way back, almost totally out of view.

We drove around there until the friendly waves we were getting from people walking around started carrying a slightly more protective subtext, so we made our way out and back onto the roads that led us back to the PCH and down to Big Sur. I think I made him listen to the entirety of the Lungfish discography many, many times on that trip, and this place sorta felt like an appropriate place to be soundtracked by that.

So I guess this is the start of my best attempts to pay homage to that magical place and probably more importantly, what I sorta imagined that weird world could be or has been like. I also kinda tied this into Camp Greensky geographically, because this is also totally the vibe that I get when I'm driving through the upper peninsula of Michigan...I feel like this is up there hidden out of sight behind all the Mystery Spot pull-offs and weathered plywood signs for "pasties." Wellston isn't in the U.P., but that's what I think of when I think of Michigan, so I don't know what else I can say.

My rough sketches (which I'm including here) are embarrassingly rough, but hopefully shows a cool part of the process, where the road forks off into wildly different directions. The trucks from the rejected option actually are based on a spot in the "mitten" of Michigan where I just saw an old Freightliner and an RV camped out next to each other for good in some tall grass, just like buddies. They eventually ended up working their way into my most recent Amos Lee poster (for his livestreams last year), which is also sorta set in the same world as this poster.

Eventually, I hope to make an art print that sorta encapsulates this place a bit better and without any kind of attachment to anything else, but of course I've got a really long wish list of stuff to make at this point...“ - DB
