Fifty years ago tonight The Who played a gig in the refectory at Leeds University. The show was recorded and released as an album in May 1970 and went on to become the best live album by anyone ever . . . ever. Let me say that again . . . ever.
To celebrate the anniversary, Pete and Roger along with Simon Townshend, Billy Nicholls, Jody Linscott and Phil Spalding are playing two 40—minute acoustic shows at Pryzm in Kingston-Upon-Thames. They also played two previous shows on Wednesday night. I designed an A2-size art print for Bravado, the band’s merchandise company to be sold at all four shows. Printed on heavyweight paper stock as a four-colour litho with a spot Pantone gold ink for the type top and bottom, it turned out pretty tasty indeed. The figures of Pete and Roger are from photographs by the great William Snyder and manipulated into flat Pop art colours. I knew beforehand that it was going to be an acoustic gig but I really liked William’s shot of Pete with his bright red Strat so I kept it in the design. I also flipped Roger round to face the opposite direction to avoid it looking like he was about to clobber Pete with his microphone.
