About this poster
This is the art print which I designed for VIP ticket holders on the current Who tour, The Who Hits Back! VIP tickets get you the best seats in the house plus extra things such as being present at band sound checks before the show, having a meet-and-greet with the band and receiving a tour bag with lots of special merchandise including these prints. At each show, 50 art prints are signed by Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey and auctioned with the auction bids and a percentage of the of VIP ticket price going to Teen Cancer America, the charity founded by Pete and Roger in 2012.
This design was based on a shot that tour photographer William Snyder had taken of Pete wearing a French Breton t-shirt and it reminded me of a similar shot of him taken in 1964 back when The Who were called the High Numbers. Breton t-shirts were a big fashion item for Mod guys in 1964. I know because I wore one myself. The red, white and blue colour palette is, of course, synonymously linked to The Who and British Pop Art, but this particular shade of red and blue came from a poster I had seen in the Fashion & Textile Museum in London for an exhibition of 60s fashion boutique, Foale & Tuffin. Ideas and influences – and even something exact as a precise shade of red and blue – can come from all directions.
