The third poster in the "Phish Artist Interpretation Series.” David Welker’s “Theme From The Bottom”.
"I'm very happy to contribute my interpretation of "Theme From The Bottom" from the Album "Billy Breathes" to the ongoing Phish "Song Series". I had the rare opportunity to listen to the final cut of this song back in 1996 with the band at the Bearsville recording studio so it has a special place for me. It's a beautifully crafted song with a methodical build up to a powerful crescendo. The hero's narrative evokes a feeling of longing or possibly unrequited love for someone who seems to float above him in life. Perhaps the hero will be noticed by his love interest or perhaps she will simply continue to float on by, never averting her gaze to see the gifts he possesses. When he forces himself upwards towards her his life becomes brighter. The watery environment seemed to be the right allegorical setting for this story. She floats above, more acclimated to the environment, easily attracting her prey, as he peers up from the depths waiting for her to spill something his way. They are separated by a long diagonal coral formation with a parchment scrolled across it that may represent the fragility of their story on dry land. Now submerged it is tattered and being slowly consumed by the sea. Rays of positivity and beauty still pervade as the song's narrator leaves the hero with strong advice... "Toss away stuff you don't need in the end. But keep what's important and know who's your friend."
