About this poster
This captivating concert poster features a hauntingly beautiful image of a cream-colored skull emerging from a bed of luxurious red roses set against a deep crimson backdrop. The artwork is framed by a black border with elegant gold trim. At the bottom, in gold lettering, the poster reads "SPECTRUM" followed by "SEPTEMBER 22, 23, 1987" and "PHILADELPHIA, PA."
This represents an important piece of music memorabilia history as the PCL-7A version that precedes the officially licensed Grateful Dead poster. Though it doesn't explicitly name the band, the skull and roses imagery unmistakably evokes Grateful Dead iconography. This was one of Phil Cushway's earliest poster designs, created as his first strategic step toward publishing more mainstream groups. The poster was designed by Hugh Brown and printed at Tea Lautrec on a one-color press before Cushway approached Winterland, who held the Grateful Dead licensing rights.
