This Tuesday I'll be releasing my first official, alternative, movie poster in almost a decade. I have cherished the books of JRR Tolkien for decades and I feel strongly that Peter Jackson gave the world an enduring treasure with his dedicated film adaptations. I wanted to capture the sweet early moments of "The Fellowship of the Ring" when Gandalf is riding his horse cart full of fireworks to Bilbo's 111th birthday party. A gnarled and twisted tree looms over him symbolizing the perilous, arduous, doom filled, epic adventure that lays before him.
"A Wizard Is Never Late" is my personal dedication to the world building of the films and their profound ability to immerse us into the mind of Tolkien himself. Preliminary sketches for this labor of love project began over a year ago. The Pen & Ink original was a slow and methodical build over several months. The colors for the final screen prints are reminiscent of the colors of the films. The screen printing is being handled by the powerhouse studio of D&L Screenprinting. There is a main edition with three variants.
Tolkiens books and Peter Jackson lovingly dedicated films are a treasure for the world. I wanted to portray Gandalf on his horse cart with his fireworks bound for Bilbos birthday party with the gnarled twisted tree looming over him standing for the saga that is about to unfold. - DW
