About this poster
Official poster design, illustration, lettering, and layout for Boston Calling Music Festival 2019.
In honor of its 10th edition, Boston Calling held a competition for that year’s official lineup poster on their Instagram, voted upon by fans. This was hand-selected by coordinators as one of two official posters for that year’s festival, available for purchase over the course of that weekend.
A personal note: I have a love/hate relationship with most music festival lineup posters. I feel like they’re either really exciting and engaging, or they’re just walls of text with the design being treated as an afterthought— imbalanced. I wanted to find a way to make the text as engaging as the background, something in your face and stylish while still being legible and balanced with the rest of the visuals. Striking that balance while keeping a focus on symmetry, contrast, detail, and a single area of focus were the main points I wanted to hit with this print.
