About this poster
About a year ago I read an oddly long article about cicadas and it focused on 2024 being a special year. In Northern Illinois a co-emergence that happens only once every 221 years is happening this year. After hearing this I made a little cicada sketch and decided to hold the thought for a poster this year.
When @climbeldo reached out and asked if I’d like to make a poster for the first date of Trey’s tour in Chicago, I had the perfect chance to get the oddball insects on paper. After some visual research, I found that the 17-year brood can have this orange and deep blue coloring which is the color palette of the Chicago Bears- so it seemed a perfect fit.
From here I played with plenty of elements hitting at the @saltshedchicago and some downtown bridge inspiration as well.
Lastly, and not leastly for me, I found out that the Morton Family have a long history with trees and that J. Sterling Morton himself founded Arbor Day! I certainly never need an excuse to focus a poster around a tree, but this seemed a proper one.
