About this poster
This Bob Marley concert poster was designed to stand apart from typical photographic concert imagery through the use of bold color blocking inspired by photo-silkscreen techniques. The artist drew from multiple visual references, including period photographs and Marley album covers such as Rastaman Vibration, African Herbsman, and Kaya, along with high-contrast photocopies used to plan the color separation and composition. The intent was to capture the spirit and presence of Bob Marley rather than rely solely on a literal portrait.
The final design was developed as a single graphic image and separated into three colors for production. Each color was rendered individually and layered to form the completed portrait.
Original 1978 posters were produced as three-color lithographs on tan card stock. Later reprints issued in 2004 were digitally reproduced. The original press run was relatively small, consistent with concert poster production of the period, with fewer than 500 copies printed.
