Grateful Dead San Francisco 68 Wilson
About this poster
This fairly plain and basic poster features a grainy and very dark photo by Robert Knight. In the photo a shoeless bearded hippy is pictured with his arms outstretched, taken from a position beneath him. At first glance you’d be forgiven for believing the man is dead on the ground, with the arms stretched out in the shape of a cross. Although no artist is listed on the poster the The West Will Sun Graffix credit at the bottom is a phonetic hint to artist Wes Wilson (West Will Sun), who created the first ten posters for the Family Dog. By this late in 1968 Chet Helms was not having his Family Dog posters printed in color, opting instead to have them printed in black and white to save money. Printed just once and measuring 14 27/64 x 20 41/64”, this poster called “Grateful Dead” is FD-141-OP-1 described on page 197 of the Eric King guide (12th ed). It is the featured image on page 103 of the Art of Rock book. Enjoy!
