About this poster
"Space Rose from concept to execution was a giant experiment in melding my own hand carved linoleum process with the precision and detail achieved through the use of photopolymer letterpress plates. Ive used photopolymer in the past for band lineups and wherever small text was necessary, but never for an actual image.
Photopolymer plates are kind of the letterpress equivalent of burning a screen in silkscreening. Same exact process of creating a separation (hand drawn, computer generated, etc) and exposing that negative onto a light sensitive plate. The exposed areas wash away, or is it the other way around? I don't know, but it leaves you with a 3 dimensional polymer plate which you can print off of.
So the first question was - How should I create the the key plate? To answer that question I made a couple versions of the main Space Rose image. The first was graphite on paper, this was more of a tonal drawing with gradations and shading throughout. This is the drawing that actually would up being the plate by applying a halftone screen to the shading.
The other was the ink of vellum drawing you see here. This would have been more of a traditional key plate but since the edition was an experiment I wanted to see how far I could really push the medium and my printing skills by running the halftone. Love the ink drawing, just wanted to try the halftone, which worked great if I do say so myself." - AJ
