About this poster
I’ve had the great pleasure of road tripping around this vast and beautiful country of ours numerous times. Some of my fondest memories are of spending countless hours behind the wheel with some of my closest friends and loved ones as we chased bands from venue to venue. We didn’t have many rules when going “on tour” but there was one solemn rule that we all had to abide by - if someone saw something that they felt was was worthy and called out “MAKE PICTURE” we would pull over and do exactly that, no questions, no argument, just stop for a minute or an hour, whatever was appropriate, take some photos, savor the moment, and get back to our travels.
Many years ago, driving from Berkeley, CA to Telluride, CO my crew and I decided to take a detour to “Make Picture” at one of our nations most spectacular natural wonders - The Grand Canyon. It was a quick stop, we had a show to get to, but it’s sheer beauty had such an impact on me that all these years later I felt it worthy of trying to capture its vast grandeur and awe in print form.
To do so I turned to my larger format Vandercook 32-28 press. Being only the second edition I’ve created on this press I thought it suiting to develop it as a companion piece to the first edition “Sequoia”. I kept the same dimensions but turned the image to a landscape view where I pushed both the composition and use of gradients in each color to give as much of a sense of immense depth as possible. One can never achieve the feeling of actually standing at the edge of this magnificent natural work of art but if I captured just a sliver of that sense I count it as a win.
In the end, our time on this earth is short and there’s so very much to see. I hope this piece inspires you to get out there and experience as much of it as possible. In other words - go MAKE PICTURE for yourself!
