Don’t lose your head trying to read Grateful Dead, spelled in the teeth! On September 22nd of 1967 the Grateful Dead with Mother Earth played the first of a pair of weekend shows at the Family Dog’s Denver Colorado venue. It was the third poster in the Family Dog Denver series. This morbidly themed and brightly colored poster by Dennis Nolan is called “The Head”. It features a central image of a skull with the face of a man in the place of the skull’s nose. Note there is no ticket outlet strip on the OP-1 poster or OPC-A postcard. These posters and postcards were intended for distribution in San Francisco. Only the handful that went to Denver have the Denver ticket outlet strip, as well as “Grateful Dead” spelled across the forehead in bold black lettering. That lettering was drawn by John Chic. According to Lee Brenkman, who worked at the Denver Dog at the time: “Both the version with the ticket outlet strip and Grateful Dead spelled out across the skulls forehead and a small number of these were shipped to the Denver Family Dog. I was there when the package was delivered”. Both variants measure 14 1/64 x 20 1/32”. The variant with Grateful Dead spelled across the forehead is designated FD-82-OP-2. It is quite rare and highly prized among collectors.
