About this poster
This is another of my early paintings titled “ The Calling of Saint Jerry” based on The Calling of Saint Matthew by Caravaggio. I was fascinated by baroque narrative paintings and ashcan school painters like George Bellows and Thomas Hart Benton. I imagined a parallel universe where Jerry Garcia was playing at the Beacon Theatre and after the show he went back to his hotel room with a bizarre cast of characters to play his cello.... in attendance we have retired pro wrestler Don Curtis ... the great train robber and a highly ethereal groupie. The door bursts open and in walks Jesus and one of his disciples pointing to Jerry saying “come with us. We want you” !
