On 13 January 1971, The Who announced a series of concerts at the Young Vic Theatre to develop their proposed film with audience input. After Keith Moon completed work on *200 Motels*, the first concert took place on 15 February, featuring a £30,000 quadrophonic PA system. Two more shows on 25 and 26 April were recorded by Andy Johns, but Pete Townshend abandoned the *Lifehouse* project, and further performances were canceled.
In July 1971, The Who began a U.S. tour ahead of the release of *Who’s Next*. The setlist featured new tracks like “My Wife,” “Baba O’Riley,” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” which became live staples using synthesizer backing tracks. The UK leg included major shows at The Oval and Rainbow Theatre. The U.S. tour ended in Seattle on 15 December, after which the band took an eight-month break. They resumed on 11 August 1972 in Frankfurt, with one 1973 show on 10 March in The Hague.
