About this poster
“I've done several posters for shows at The Gorge, and understandably they usually want something based on the landscape, which is great, but it can be hard to find a new way to approach it each time. I have a longstanding love of old travel brochures and travel ads, and I wanted to do something that referenced that. I guess I got attached to the idea of composing it like one of those long, narrow travel leaflets; to be totally honest, it gets old always having to design for 18x24 format, which is what bands usually want, and so once I had it in my head that I wanted to do a longer image, I was determined to make it happen, which is how I wound up with what is basically a poster of a poster. I wasn't really thinking about it in a meta way at all, it really was just a way to get to compose my main rectangle in a slightly different way than normal, with the added benefit of allowing for simultaneous micro and macro view of the landscape, which was fun for me. I heard afterward that there was sort of an uncharacteristic amount of litter left at the site after the shows, and I was told there was speculation as to whether my poster was somehow predicting that fact by showing garbage on the ground. I thought that was a pretty funny idea, and I appreciate the compliment ?." - JS
