This image shows a detailed, psychedelic gig poster created by David Welker for Phish's concert in Reading, Pennsylvania during their 2013 Fall Tour. The artwork presents a fantastical, surreal interpretation of Reading with vibrant colors dominated by magenta, lavender, blue, and neon green hues. This artwork was later released as an art print titled "River Town."
The intricate illustration features a whimsical landscape with Reading's iconic Pagoda visible on the right side of the composition. The scene depicts a river town nestled among hills, with elaborate pink/purple structures, walkways, and bridges creating a dreamlike cityscape. The poster incorporates numerous waterways and winding paths throughout.
Welker included several characters from "Phishlore" in the design, including what he described as "Rutherford as a young lad crossing the bridge with his skateboard" rather than drowning as the story goes. In the water, there are several fantastical elements including townspeople attempting to lasso an octopus, an alligator dancing with a banjo player, and strange bulbous creatures fishing with extended tongues. On the horizon, there's a shark atop a pyramid, which the artist suggests might reference either a financial crisis or the Phish song "Wilson."
The artist spent a month conceiving the design and two weeks executing it. The color palette was finalized with input from his wife and intern, giving it what he called a "feminine touch" with vibrant magenta, lavender and neon greens, creating a more playful feel than his initial "somber, old-storybook" color concept.
The poster was produced as a 22-by-14-inch, six-color screen print with metallic silver on Madero Beach paper for Phish's October 29, 2013 show at the Sovereign Center.
