About this poster
“When thinking about what I’m going to do for a Dirty Heads poster, my mind always jumps to an octopus first. When I run out of octopus ideas, I’ll do something else, but I love challenging myself to figure out some fresh way to portray the octopus. This time I was thinking about all the tentacles I’ve drawn over the years, and I thought, ‘maybe I should pursue a different focal point for the octopus this time.’ So I went to the head, and thought it would be cool to show the eye peeking above the surface of the water. I decided I would put the rest of the octopus underwater, so I literally printed a transparent blue color over everything except for that eye and surrounding area. This served to pull the viewer’s eye up to meet the octopus’s eye, since it would be the most vivid part of the poster (being free of the water overlay which mutes the brightness of the octopus color). Going closer up on the creature like this also let me get crazy with the octopus skin texture, which I thoroughly enjoyed.”
