Les is back at it again with the Claypool Gold Tour featuring Primus, The Claypool Lennon Delirium and Frog Brigade. Working with the Claypool camp has become an annual thing for me and I was stoked to get the call about doing another poster for them. I’ve already covered my love for Primus since the early 90’s in numerous posts, so I won’t bore you with going back into all of that again.
For this one I wanted to play around with the idea of children’s variety shows from the 50’s and 60’s (like Howdy Doody or Captain Kangaroo), mixed with The Krusty the Clown Show from the Simpsons (there are only a few bands where I feel like you can get away with drawing a clown, and Primus is one of them). “Claypool Gold” being the name of the show, the three bands being the featured guests. Are the kids in the audience scared because the Claypool Clown came springing out of the TV or because it turned out to actually be a four eyed chimp? Who’s to say?
In addition to the Regular Edition of the poster, I will also have small quantities of a few variants that will only be available in my store. There are Gold Foil, Rainbow Foil and Broadcast (black and white) Editions, and these are the only foil versions created for the show, so I would recommend signing up for my Mailing List (link in bio) if you’re interested in one. There will be an email going out with the AP Drop info sometime in the next day or two. There’s also an event exclusive shirt available tonight that I designed with a modified version of the poster art.
Thanks again to Gibbs for bringing me on for another go around and to Lady Lazarus for the killer print work. As always, this was created with non photo blue pencil, ink and a brush on Bristol board (there are some process shots in there for the nerds) and colored with a variety of tools from True Grit Texture Supply.
