Honored again to present new work for the incomparable @davidbyrneofficial for his show this past Saturday, right here in Nashville!
Working with David still is such a pinch-me moment, and this now was the second time I’ve gotten the yips when making work for him - but this time it didn’t come from the concept phase, it moreover came from pitching an idea in a style I’m nowhere near comfortable working in, for an idea that shows one of the most recognizable streets in Nash in a different light than it typically is shown in poster form. Luckily their team trusted me fully, and I’m super stoked with how it came out.
As far as the actual inspo - I’ve been here in town for just shy of four years now, and I lived just a few blocks off broadway for the first two of these four. Before I went sober, I would often walk to meet friends for a drink on a rooftop or to catch a game at one of the “way too big tv” sports bars downtown. The novelty *did* wear off, but the walk never did - mainly because broadway during golden hour is something else. The street gets bathed in warm light, with the neon starting to really flicker on and creating such a cool, dynamically lit view… set that to naive melody or and she was, and you have a truly magical scene coming together in the ol noggin.
I took that, sprinkled in some references merged with some existing signage from broadway, then created tiny David & co. Dancing to their own melody against the grain of the hustle and bustle of downtown. Once those pieces came together, the idea came together wonderfully. I hope y’all dig it as much as I did making it!
