About this poster
According to Phil Cushway of ArtRock, who produced this edition, he and Rick had discussed reprinting the poster for more than two years before production began. The original BG-105 film was reused, with additional colors introduced to more closely match the original artwork, including two separate tones of red. This edition was printed using oil-based inks, selected for their superior color saturation despite being banned in California at the time due to their toxic properties. Printing was carried out by Arellanes at a rate of one color per day, under a condensed schedule to minimize the risk of paper swelling from moisture. Registration was achieved using a simple folded-paper guide to maintain precise alignment. These labor-intensive methods and restricted materials made the edition exceptionally costly to produce.
Before trimming began, Rick personally selected the finest impressions from the run and designated them as Artist Proofs (AP). These larger-format examples measure approximately 28 7/8 × 44 inches and are signed and numbered “A/P xx.” An estimated 50 copies are known to exist. The primary distinguishing characteristic of these Artist Proofs is their untrimmed top and bottom margins, setting them apart from the standard trimmed edition.
Impressions that did not meet Rick’s exacting standards were designated simply as Proofs. While still visually striking, these examples exhibit minor flaws that are typically imperceptible to the casual viewer. Ever the perfectionist, Rick chose not to sign these copies. An unknown number of unsigned Proofs are believed to exist.
