About this poster
I wanted to create a little world within this poster. A lush and fun collection of nonsense that turns into something new as it comes together!
I’m always inspired by the legendary poster artists and ephemera of the 60s and 70s, along with old maps. This time, I started by drawing the main “Eggy” type using the classic Rick Griffin typeface. I filled in the rest by adding the circular globe shape.
I’ve always wanted to make a square poster - something different from the usual 18x24 size that we’re all used to - and I’m so glad that the band was ready to go for it! This helped me achieve the fun nonsense I was going for by departing from the standard, expected size. These aren’t meant to be normal posters.
It’s important to me to create in a way that has very little resistance. It has to be fun and easy throughout the process or the final product won’t feel the way I want it to. Most things are drawn in one draft to prevent overworking them.
I like to listen to music while I work - in this case, Waiting Game - to get inspiration from the textures, sounds, and physical sensations I get from the music itself. I pay more attention to the finding the right balance of silly and serious rather than to the content itself. I find that this allows me to find my most honest interpretation of how the music makes me feel!
I don’t think too hard about it - I find things that scratch my brain in just the right way and go for it. This includes a collage-like process of small, quick drawings that I make in ink pen or graphite, along with inspiration from vintage books. I work with my scanner nearby, loads of scrap paper, and lots of alone time :)
