Okay gang, story time.. I must of been 13 in the week leading up to Christmas & my mum asked me what I wanted, I said Metallica records. I printed off a sheet of paper with pictures of the first 5 albums, my mum said I’m not buying you all of those.. pick one. I grabbed a pen and drew a ring around ‘ the blue one ‘ it had an electric chair on..it was the obvious choice, a choice that changed my life.
Nearly 20 years later, to be asked to make some art to celebrate this momentous landmark in music history, truly is a dream come true.. and one I’ve been working towards all this time.
I wanted to keep this really limited in terms of digital colouring & editing, all hand inked the only way I know how. The four crows perched on the gigantic chains holding the cracked bell represent the four members of the band. The padlock with the etched 40 for forty years of heavy metal power. The rays of light breaching the smoked filled sky referencing that ‘ crack of dawn ‘ we all love to much. The skull bell ringing so loud over the graves below, lightning snaps at ground beneath.
