Are We Next? Be Aware 67 Wilson (LE) - RP-2 Edition, AoR-2.363
About this poster
Created at the very beginning of the Vietnam War, Are We Next? marks Wes Wilson’s first poster and one of the earliest examples of his socially charged work. Designed shortly after returning from service as a company commander in Vietnam, the piece reflects Wilson’s deep unease with America’s growing involvement in the conflict.
Printed in 1964, the poster was self-published by Wilson and printed at West Coast Lithograph in San Francisco. The print quality shows streaking in the blacks and uneven inking, typical of the small independent print runs of the time. No records survive of how many were produced, but surviving examples are considered extremely rare.
Wilson originally paired his image of the American flag overlaid with a swastika with the words Be Aware. At the suggestion of a pressman, he added the phrase Are We Next? — transforming the image into a pointed warning about blind nationalism and the direction of U.S. foreign policy.
This historic piece later inspired Alex Lenz’s 2003 “We Are Next” and Uncle Charlie’s 2004 work of the same title, both tributes to Wilson’s original anti-war message.
In Wilson’s own words, the poster was meant to “significantly express my shock and anguish as an American about such an obviously erroneous and costly ethical mistake as was the Vietnam War.” The question he posed sixty years ago — Are We Next? — remains a timeless call for awareness and accountability.
This second printing was produced by Berkeley Bonaparte, featuring the same design and colors as Wes Wilson’s original 1964 issue. The image and layout remain identical, with the only change being the added print credit at the bottom.
This version was printed on thinner stock and in a larger format, typical of Berkeley Bonaparte’s production standards in the late 1960s. Despite these differences, it retains the striking impact and historical significance of Wilson’s original anti-war statement.
