I've lived in the Cincinnati area for almost 20 years and, in that time, I've never experienced the buzz around the Bengals as much as during the Joe Burrow era. Since the NFL season is just around the corner, I knew I wanted to do something related to that. Then I secluded myself, put on some 311, and sort of let the music organically guide my thoughts (and pencil). I find a lot of concepts this way! Anyway, the song "Homebrew" came on. Since the Bengals play in (what is referred to as) "the jungle", these particular lyrics caught my attention...
A drone buzzes the air a cracklin' tone
Then boomin' like thunder in a cosmic jungle
Death defyin, like Knievel he weeble
Words that will wobble awkward and evil
I've always dug this LSD inspired song and decided to get trippy. So I depicted P-Nut descending down the staircase tongue of a bengal in the middle of a jungle...in a Fred Astaire manner no less. There's an 8-bit, Excitebike referenced Evel Knievel, a drone, some stars inspired by the 4th of July, etc. Also, since the show is specifically in Newport, I wanted to pay tribute to that area. Back in the day (pre-Vegas), Newport was considered the original "Sin City" with lots of casinos and a big mafia presence. This is referenced by the roulette wheel illustration on the left. The Brass Ass is an old strip club that was once owned by Larry Flynt and is still in operation. It has a very unique neon sign, so I depicted a detail of that below the roulette wheel. Fun side note...my mother-in-law briefly worked there!
Anyway, it's a little Cincinnati, a little Newport, a bit psychedelic, and a smidge of P-Nut. It was fun as hell to design and hope you dig!
