About this poster
This artwork was originally created for the Grateful Dead’s triple live album Europe ‘72. Designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, the piece began as a pair of airbrush paintings for the planned front and back covers. The working titles were Over There and Rainbow Foot (later changed when the album was finalized).
Mouse described the project as being created in the freewheeling era before the Dead had art directors, giving him and Kelley the freedom to push wild and experimental ideas. The result is one of the band’s most iconic visual identities from the early ‘70s, capturing the playful and psychedelic spirit of the time.
