About this poster
Inspiration hits differently everytime I sit down to make something like this, so let’s take a stroll down “Concept Ave.” together here, shall we?
On their latest record, in the track “Rushmere”, there was a single lyrical line that sparked the fire, if you will.
“Come get lost in a fairground crowd when no one knows your name.”
That line just stuck out to me because it had a sense of romantic, chaotic summer love and evoked nostalgic thought of being younger and outside and having fun in the hot summer months, carelessly under the nights stars.
I felt that idea was a great starting point for this rolling roadshow summer spectacular the band is currently embarked on and from there, the concept I wanted to explore emerged.
I have always had a fondness for nostalgic, vintage posters. Clunky imperfect typography and making an image look and feel like it was from another time.
I took this “fairground” concept to a visual form and wanted to create the poster for tonight’s show in the styling of those classic, hand-pressed retro county fair and circus posters you’ve seen and loved your whole life.
From details like incorporating the lyrics that inspired this idea into the art, using the classic color scheme these posters often used, to subtly using bits of album art and Mumford logos into our “fairground” with the city resting quietly in the distance, this one came together exactly how I had hoped and it was a pleasure working with the band and making it!
No creative journey is ever the same for me and as you see, sometimes words can evoke memories, which set the stage for style and approach to execute a concept.
