This art print, titled "As The Mammoth Leaves Town" by Marq Spusta, depicts a surreal and whimsical nighttime scene where a large, woolly mammoth with drooping eyes calmly walks through a city street. Atop its head sits a small child-like figure, while the mammoth gently holds a bird on its tusk. Around it, a group of quirky, cartoonish characters dance, gawk, and interact with the mammoth as it makes its melancholic journey. The surrounding cityscape, complete with silhouetted skyscrapers and a starry sky, adds to the dreamlike atmosphere of the piece.
Interestingly, this design was originally created for a Widespread Panic gig poster for their 2008 Chicago show, but it was rejected by the band. Despite this, the artwork found new life and appreciation when it was later released at the Gallery 1988 "Inner Nature" group show.
"As The Mammoth Leaves Town" has since been printed in multiple color editions, including Blue, Green, Black, and Ash, each enhancing different emotional tones of the scene. The piece is celebrated among collectors for its distinctive blend of emotion, whimsy, and narrative depth—hallmarks of Spusta’s signature style.
