There’s some great context behind the concept on this print and it might seem like a fish story…. I’ve seen a lot of Leftover Salmon shows through the years, more than I can count and even though we’ve never worked together until now I’ve had the same sketch tucked away since 2015 in one of my books for them. It was on a post it note and it was salmon being served on a plate thanksgiving style with a wild fork, with way too many spokes coming off to spell the name and imply it was time to serve it up. It felt very dark and too silly every time I stumbled across it again but I began to think, maybe someday it’ll get the right narrative reason to turn into a good idea. A creative ying-yang if you will. When I started on this project I knew we needed to tip the hat to Jerry but in a subtle way so we weren’t plagiarizing their icons but it be something us heads would decode immediately. I’ve always loved the Jerry Wolf art & connection to the music, so as I’ve share the music with my kids, my son was the one who actually suggested the idea. The notorious wolf as the character threatening the salmon was the connection back to that first ever sketch and I saw exactly who the concept could work in full spirit. This illustration style is inspired by Brooklyn-style, traditional tattoo art and was a fun new departure from the recent brush work I’ve been doing.
