About this poster
This one is a diptych for this weekends run of shows for @billystrings in Bridgeport, CT. When researching the city, I found out that it’s home to the Barnum Museum and that one of their main attractions is “The Centaur of Tymfi,” a life sized centaur skeleton. I knew that I wanted to play around with that as a jumping off point, mixed with a stage decorated with wooden western cutouts, Art Deco style clamshell lighting and a Roy Rogers style, singing cowboy. While looking at old Barnum and Bailey posters, I saw one with a marching band where all of the players had these super exaggerated legs and tiny torsos. My son actually suggested making the centaur cowboy I’d sketched out have an elongated torso and the other character be the reverse, a horse head & upper body, with super elongated human legs. What's crazy, is that while I was sketching out the stage set up, I kept thinking about Hee-Haw and watching it with my grandparents as a kid. I'd totally forgotten about Stringbean (who obviously was still floating around in my brain somewhere), but what's even crazier, is that a fan of Billy's sent me a photo of him where it looks like he was dressed up as Stringbean at a show (maybe for Halloween?). Sometimes there are coincidences that just make everything lineup in ways that you weren't expecting, but are super fun. I wanted to try and flip this diptych so that each poster would be 12” x 36,” with really stretched out characters, but while it was a fun idea, they’d be a nightmare to roll at the show and super expensive to frame afterwards because of the odd size.
