About this poster
When I got the nod for this show, so many possibilities occurred to me. If you aren't aware, this venue was home to the very first US Open in 1915. It hosted the event for many years but, perhaps, the most interesting one is the last year...in 1977. Essentially, the popularity of the sport and the event had outgrown the facility, resulting in being overcrowded by a number of unruly fans. The Open occurred not long after the Summer of Sam and, actually, two of the Son of Sam/David Berkowitz's victims were killed just a couple of blocks away. A city wide blackout and 9 day heat wave also occurred just before the Open, resulting in riots amidst an ongoing financial crisis. Also, the Yankees, with new superstar Reggie Jackson, were having an up and down season on their way to winning the World Series (a few months later). The point is...the scene was chaotic. There were multiple stories of note from that particular Open, but it all concluded with Guillermo Vilas defeating Jimmy Connors in a fantastic back-and-forth match. The US fans had turned on the American and were, instead, rooting for the Argentinian Vilas. Inspired by the long-haired, headband sporting Vilas and his dramatic victory, I decided to depict Seth Avett in similar fashion mid-serve. As a devoted researcher, I received all sorts of crazy looks from the Mrs. as I watched the entire men's final match on my iPad during a road trip. That's devotion, folks!
