About this poster
The piece depicts my interpretation of the song “Crown of Barbed Wire,” and is inspired by the album cover, the dark paintings of the artist Francis Bacon, the iconic art of Katsuhiro Otomo (specifically the character of Testuo of Akira fame) and the atmosphere of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s fromsoft videogames. The lyrics suggest a ruler in external pain and inner turmoil, heavily constricted and absolutely corrupted by power. To that effect, the figure is ensconced in rusty chains, serpentine razor wire and Lovecraftian tentacles, pinned to an ashen throne adorned with festering skulls and rivulets of blood spreading radially like exposed veins. A terrible yet meticulously crafted halo enshrines the figure’s head which bears an ambiguous expression falling somewhere between delighted psychosis and a knowing, revenant snarl. His entire body is racked with rot as he oversees a scene of enveloping entropy, populated only by death, distant plumes of explosive heat and the charred remains of a more innocent life long since left behind.
