Gig Poster
Phish The Great Went Limestone 97 Ryan
About this poster
Sarah, a talented artist from the Burlington, VT area, was commissioned by Lars Fisk, the visionary behind the Phish festivals since Clifford Ball, to craft a poster for the Went festival. Sarah and Lars had forged a friendship during their time as classmates at UVM. Upon Lars' recommendation, Phish enlisted Sarah's artistic prowess to produce a map-style poster of the festival grounds.
After completing the design, Sarah meticulously silk-screened the image onto two distinct types of paper: 500 copies on sturdy poster stock and a similar number on lightweight brown craft paper. Initially tackling the task of coloring the poster prints herself, Sarah enlisted the help of a friend as time dwindled, managing to complete around 250 before the festival.
Phish facilitated booths for both Sarah and Jim Pollock, positioned near the "Village" section depicted in Sarah's poster. A snapshot captures Sarah engrossed in her booth, showcasing the stamp she used to mark each piece with a red "seal" and her hands adorned with ink as she continued printing on the craft paper.
While Sarah's contributions to Phish events primarily comprised these posters and some signage for the Coventry show, she recalls selling most, if not all, of the printed posters, with any remaining copies reverting to Phish's ownership. Sarah rarely autographed copies unless requested persistently, resulting in very few signed pieces.
Reflecting on the poster's various versions, Sarah notes five distinct iterations, including hand-painted and printed variations. Additionally, there exists a potential sixth version painted by Sarah's friend and signed by Sarah, although specifics remain somewhat ambiguous.
As for surviving copies, Sarah retains the original drawing of the map and a solitary colored print, while approximately 15 colored prints are accounted for elsewhere, along with only a handful of the black-and-white thick stock versions. A whimsical query arises regarding an inventory of extant copies, hinting at the poster's enduring allure.
