"Four Horsemen," a captivating creation by the talented artist and musician John Baizley, renowned for his involvement with the band Baroness. This remarkable piece was originally crafted for Revolver's 2011 collector's edition, dedicated to the iconic metal bands: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. The artwork resonated so profoundly with Metallica that James Hetfield acquired the original piece for his personal collection, and Metallica officially licensed the image. Baizley's creative journey led him to enhance the artwork with vibrant colors, as showcased here, for the exclusive "Four Horsemen" t-shirt design. In a candid interview with Revolver, he confessed, "During my teenage years, I would have gone to great lengths to see my art on a Metallica shirt."
Baizley's artistic process began with an initial concept, originating as a pencil sketch. Each of the four legendary bands was assigned to a specific Horseman, a decision made after careful consideration. The white horse symbolized Conquest and naturally took the lead, a fitting representation for Metallica in his view. He elaborates, "Then there's the red horse, symbolizing War, a perfect match for Slayer's intense essence." Anthrax, named after a disease, was assigned the black rider, Famine, creating an intriguing connection. Finally, the pale horse embodied Death, a direct tie to Megadeth's distinctive name. Baizley meticulously developed the sketch, adding depth and detail with pen and ink, resulting in the captivating masterpiece known as "Four Horsemen."
