About this poster
I was thinking about the inspiration for this piece and it brought back old memories. I’ve been asked many times to draw an octopus. I generally avoid it because the tentacles are so complex with all the twisting and turning with all the suction cups, and mixed in with my ornate style, it’s A LOT. Back in April 2018, Joseph Hall asked me to do a print for Dirty Heads. In all honesty, I never heard of them at the time. He was raving about how awesome Dirty Heads is as a band and what a hardcore following they’ve acquired. That’s how it all started. I told Joseph, I rarely reach out for work because it never ends up happening, but I’ll happily work on a print for DH if they ever reached out. Fast forward 5 years, I got the opportunity to work on a DH print, thank you Morgan Miller!!! After accepting the offer, I had to put on my big boy pants and draw a damn octopus LOL. If you’re familiar with my work, I usually have a floating animal as the main subject with ornate decorations to frame the animal. For this piece, I wanted a “close up” view of the octopus to make it the star, and ignore relying on an ornate frame. Instead of adding ornate detail to every inch of the octopus, I decided the octopus is complex enough, no need to force my style into it. Overall, the sketching and inking took about 40+ hours, and another 20+ hours refining it digitally. I was skeptical the entire time working on this design, because it was outside of my usual process. Things didn’t come together until I played with the colors over and over. I wasn’t happy until I get the epiphanic “Ahhhhhhh” moment.
