About this poster
In the summer of 1991, as The Smashing Pumpkins released their debut album 'Gish', I was immersed in the world of graphic design as an intern at The Pushpin Group. There, I spent countless hours resizing type and images in the stat room, delivering my work to the discerning eyes of Seymour Chwast, Greg Simpson, and Roxanne Slimak. On several occasions, I also worked with the elements I had enlarged and reduced. I distinctly remember assisting Seymour Chwast on his design for the Mobile Masterpiece Theater poster for SLEEPERS, carefully slicing and affixing type letter-by-letter to his exact specifications, using an Xacto blade and rubber cement. The type? Extracted from Hironori Yasuda’s “Pineapple’s Studio Graphic Original Style Alphabets Collection” —a treasured find from the same era when I first encountered the sounds of The Smashing Pumpkins. Fast forward three decades >> I was asked to design the concert poster for The Smashing Pumpkins’ show last night in Wheatland, California. Memory steered me back to the Pineapple book, and once again I dug in and sliced up its “original style” alphabets. The past isn't just a whisper; it's a profound resonance, shaping the work we create today and influencing what will come tomorrow.
