About this poster
Earlier in the year I’d created the tour announcement artwork that was underwater themed, so we wanted to carry that through to the poster, and also include some of the weird creatures that were created for the summer tour tickets / magnets. Ultimately we settled on a jellyfish monster shocking a submarine that was exploring the sea floor and the light from that exposing all of the other creatures that were lurking around in the dark. Since I was going to be drawing a submarine, I knew there were a few nods that I wanted to get in there. First had to be to the Yellow Submarine, one of the first records I got of my own when I was 4 or 5 years old. The combination of hand drawn and collage animation in that movie had a deeper impact on me than I thought it did, and definitely influences the way that I work now. Second, I wanted to toss in a nod to Spy vs Spy and the type of subs that they cruised around in, and finally (and most obvious), I’d always wanted to do an homage to one of my favorite underground comic covers, Zap Comix #0 by Robert Crumb. There’s a regular edition that’s in the Zap color scheme and then a special Blacklight variant that turned out pretty fun.
