About this poster
The portraits of the bearded men on this handbill are the Smith Brothers, of Smith Brothers Cough Drops, the first widely distributed cough drop in the US, and a popular American brand between 1852 and 1963. On the left is William Wallace Smith (1830 -1913) with “Trade” under his portrait. On the right is his brother Andrew Smith (1836 – 1895) with “Mark” under his portrait. When the company obtained its trademark in 1877 each box of cough drops was stamped with their portraits and Trade and Mark – which became nicknames for William and Andrew for the rest of their lives. The image was one of the most recognizable in American culture, often spoofed in comic books, television shows and pop culture. Long before ZZ Top the Smith Brothers were the most recognized bearded men in America. Here, they are used in a Monopoly game card spoof. “Go to jail. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200 – Parker Brothers”.
