About this poster
This black-and-white poster centers on a striking image of a nude woman standing atop a rock pedestal, arms raised as she holds a flowing cloth. The figure is based on La Aurora (“The Dawn”), a sculpture by French artist Émile Peynot located in Plaza Rodríguez Peña within Parque Centenario, Buenos Aires, and likely created in the early 1900s.
At the time, some in the counterculture criticized the “hippies” for not being politically active enough—and even suggested that artist Alton Kelley’s work shared that flaw. In response, Kelley added a bold red star to the design as a subtle nod to the critique.
Created for Jefferson Airplane’s 1967 Denver concerts at the Family Dog with The Other Half, this poster is #9 in the Denver Family Dog series, titled “Fan Fare.” It was printed only once, with no postcards produced.
