About this poster
"While I was going to art school in Denver in the early 70's, I was trying to assess what I liked as an artist. I loved drawing people and portraits, but liked colorful, near fantasy scenes.
During a visit to a book store, I 'discovered' Maxfield Parrish, whose paintings captured that type of art so well. I bought a Parrish book that had a chapter in the back about his painting technique of painting beautiful women in glazes and layers.
I poured over this and decided I had to try it myself. Coincidentally, a singer-songwriter friend, Rodney Ferguson, gave me some lyrics to read....
She had summer eyes...as green as the clover
with a voice as soft as velvet feels, velvet fields
and the moonlight on her shoulder
knows the secret only morning steals, mourning steals.
To me, this seemed about fear of the dark, and how things are really no different between day and night, except the lack of light...nothing to fear.
I sketched the 2 girls...one looking behind her, in fear...the other looking bravely ahead. I found my image and interpretation.
I spent many weeks on the painting. First, I created a totally monochrome piece in blues and systematically glazed in the colors until finished.
I learned so much studying this layered style, that it soon applied to the way I draw (especially portraits), paint in oils, and even screenprint layers for posters and shirts. It systematically works so well for me." - SJ
