About this poster
On September 30th of 1967 Vanilla Fudge and the Charles Lloyd Quartet played the first of three consecutive shows at the Avalon Ballroom, in San Francisco. Lights by the North American Ibis Alchemical Co. The woman pictured in a sheer gauze peignoir is an image that appeared on the cover of “Kaloma, Valse Hesitante (Hesitation Waltz)” composed by Gire Goulineaux. Kaloma became a WWI pinup and appeared on postcards later. Her image was used by artist Alton Kelley, who made Kaloma the centerpiece of this classic Family Dog poster. The orange Family Dog logos on both sides seem to rise up from the bright red background. This poster called “Dian” has a “Mouse Studios!” credit, but was done solely by Alton Kelley. It was printed twice in the 60’s. The first printing FD-85-OP-1 has black type in the ticket outlet strip. It measures 14 1/64 x 20 1/64”. The second printing FD-85-RP-2 substitutes green type for the black.
The poster and postcard variants for FD-85 are described on page 151 of the King guide (12th ed). On that page in the King guide the identity of the woman is suggested to be Josephine Marcus, the wife of the famous gunslinger lawman, Wyatt Earp. FD-85 is pictured on page 101 of the Art of Rock book.
