About this poster
On September 22nd of 1967 the Charlatans and Buddy Guy played the first of three shows at the Avalon Ballroom, in San Francisco. This poster is exemplary of artist Robert “Bob” Fried’s mastery of mechanical drawing and graphic art skills. A complex series of fine lines form a convex grid which simulates a bright white hole in a dome in the sky. The center of the circle is sun yellow. Upon close examination and enlargement you can see other colors of grids. The colors are a white to yellow, with purple lines between the yellow lines. The grids are set against a rust orange background. The central image is of a man flying a vintage bi-wing glider. Talk about a party for your eyes viewing this under the illumination of a tri-color wheel! That’s when the purple lines will pop. Bob pays homage to his friend Victor Moscoso with the lettering at the bottom of the poster, which Moscoso debuted in February 1967 with his FD-46 “Dance of the Five Moons” poster. This original poster is the 83rd image in the Family Dog series, called “Sky Web”.
