About this poster
Marq Spusta's "The Witches" originated as a concert poster for Witch's February 26th, 2009 show at DC9 in Washington DC, before being released as an art print series in multiple color variants - silver/grey, purple, navy blue, and copper/brown. Each variant brings its own emotional resonance to the piece while maintaining the intricate detail of the original illustration.
The composition centers on a floating island of densely twisted, dark organic matter from which grows a gnarled tree covered in star-like blooms. Two ethereal female figures nestle within the twisted mass, holding what appears to be a toad or frog. The tree harbors several creatures including an owl, while golden serpentine forms weave through the dark matter below. Tiny butterflies or moths drift downward from the base of the floating mass, adding to the piece's mystical atmosphere.
The different background colors transform the mood of the piece - from ethereal (silver) to mystical (purple) to nocturnal (navy) to earthy (copper) - while the intricate linework and delicate details remain consistent across all variants. The transition from concert poster to art print, with the removal of the venue and date information, allows the artwork to stand alone as a fine art piece, though it retains its connection to the musical context of its origin.
