About this poster
This is the 22nd image in the Family Dog series, the classic “Frankenstein” poster for the “Greatful” Dead. You misread that right - artists Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse were creating their first poster for the Grateful Dead. Apparently, they were uncertain as to how the band’s name was spelled. They would more than make up for it the following month, with FD-26 the iconic “Skeleton and Roses” poster. There were two variants of original “Frankenstein” posters printed on vellum paper stock. The first was a run of 1,500 before the shows. The second was a run of 1,000 printed a few weeks later. Both have the Bindweed Press credit in the lower left corner. It is unknown which of the two was printed first, so both are considered originals. The posters are black on bright yellow, on a white background. The OP-1 measures 14 ¼ x 19 15/16”. The OP-2 measures 13 15/16 x 19 61/64”. However, the main distinguishing factor between the OP-1 and OP-2 printings according to Eric King is the presence of black ink overprint specs on the back of the OP-1. So while mine pictured measures 13 15/16 x 19 61/64” it is an OP-1. It has been signed by Stanley Mouse. No printing with “No 22-2” exists. On the uncoated index stock first reprint RP-3 there is a “No 22-3” in the lower right corner.
