Meeting certain people is like a car crash. You think you’re driving to a town without a Thai restaurant, to the gas station with a wall of jerky and only dusty spring water, two hours drive to spend four hours to drive two hours. You drive expecting an open door at the top of the 37 stairs, a blue couch and green chair in the corner, a moan and smile when you touch, and all those worries disappear. You expect to make love in the room by the car she shares with her ex, or watch her in a Zoom meeting as she’s professional on top and not so much under her desk, sitting on a bench because her parents didn’t buy her a chair but they did buy her a house.
And then it’s gone. That trip is broken in an instant. The world you wanted is broken and changed. You start thinking of life as before and after that collision. That accident makes you ache at times, you have a lingering pain, you have a heart shaped wound everywhere you look, and you’re more cautious, wary.
Eventually time heals all wounds. That head on collision no longer wakes you up at night, you no longer feel that phantom touch, but you startle at the slightest idea and reminder.
