"Very grateful to be invited to be one of 6 (maybe 7?) artists chosen to create a poster as part of @metallica’s #BlackAlbum2021 reissue celebration. I can’t really think of anything bigger than this when it comes to creating art for metal bands, so apparently it’s all downhill from here for me! Honestly though this is a huge one for me and I’m really stoked on it. I put a ton of time into this, both concept and execution, I hope it shows though in the final product. I’ve been a huge Metallica fan since the …And Justice For All days, and the Black Album has literally never been out of rotation for me since it came out the first time, so it’s an incredible honor for me to be able to do this and be a small part of the reissue. If anyone is still reading this caption and is interested, a note about the concept: the original lyrics of the song tell about James’ experience dealing with a long distance relationship while on the road as a touring musician. I wanted to express those same feelings in this art, but in a different way. I tried to illustrate those same emotions between two people separated not by distance, but social class. About not caring what people think or say about your relationship and how successful it may or may not be because of the challenges involved, and that only you and your partner know what’s best for yourselves and your future together. I chose turn of the [20th century] victorian society, partly because I just love the aesthetic of that period in history, but also because my intention would be more apparent in the dress." - DD
