About this poster
This sketch is for an image which has been subject to much speculation. The event cited on the poster was a series of Dead concerts in Berkeley in 1984. Rick may or may not have been asked by the band to create a poster but the design was not officially accepted by the band nor was it used to promote the event. In the 1990s a limited edition, artist-signed poster edition of this image came onto the market and it has also been used on the cover of a Grateful Dead bootleg album. Whenever, and for whom it was actually created, remains uncertain, but nevertheless it is a very strong work. Rick drew on past Grateful Dead imagery, including the skull, lightning bolt and Egyptian Pharaoh motif to create a bold new poster design. The pencil drawing was likely to have been produced while working out the final composition, whilst the felt pen sketches were for deciding the color scheme. They are a testimony to the time-consuming process Rick went through before inking or painting final poster designs.
